Migrating from iPhone to Samsung

I have had enough of my iPhone 4. I spent 2 hours trying to download a PDF onto my iPhone that was sent to me by email and couldn’t do it; apparently this function is not natively supported on the iPhone. How smart?

iTunes is the slowest and most annoying piece of software that I have ever the displeasure of using. Even though I specifically specify what I want to sync; it would precede any “sync” function with an annoying “Backup”.

I am hoping that after migrating to an Android system I will never have to use another piece of software written by Apple. Also, I cannot see any of the Flash websites on iPhones; Steve Jobs says that it is become the software is “Closed” http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/. People in Glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

OS X is a closed system
iTunes is a closed system

Can you develop an App and sell it independently? NO is the answer; so it seems that Apple are a proponent of “Closed” systems so long as they own it otherwise would be deemed a terrible thing. Steve Jobs dying offers the world a glimmer of hope to the world that Apple will become less hypocritical.

Migrating Contacts from iPhone to Android

(1) Use iTunes (hopefully for the last time) – Sync your contacts to Google Contacts

Migrating Contacts from iPhone to SamSung

(2) Go to your Android Phone and do the following:-( On my Samsung phone)

(i) Applications
(ii) Settings
(iii) Accounts and Sync
(iv) Add Account
(v) Choose “Google” if you have a Gmail account
(vi)  Enter your Gmail Login and Password details

After that all your contacts should be transferred onto your phone. This assumes that your Phone is connected to the Internet.

4 January, 2011

After migrating to the Samsung Phone my life has changed dramatically to the better – the Android platform allows you to customise your dashboard which is really useful because now the first page of my phone will display all of my latest emails and I don’t need to click into the mail program to view emails. Also I can add on the dashboard financial charts which update automatically and I don’t need to click into the browser and then open up the charts that I need – it saves me a huge amount of time.

However, there is one major shortcoming of the Samsung Galaxy II phone and that is it takes ages and ages for the phone to charge up. We are looking at 3-4 hours to charge and that is simply ridiculous and not practical.

High Speed Train Timetable | 高铁时刻 時間表

Price for a ticket as of June 2011 is 490 RMB for second class and 780 RMB for first class and this is for a single ticket from Shanghai.  The trains stop many times in the middle; so most of the time the train will stop in ChangSha (which is the capital of Hunan) and other smaller cities and the price of the ticket would be less.

It’s been hard finding the train timetable for the new high speed train running from Shanghai. Please find below the information you need:-

To ascertain where each train stops you can check out the official website below:-

How to deal with drug-resistant E Coli?

Escherichia coli (E coli) is one of the most common bacteria in the world and is one that we know most about.  The discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Fleming drastically reduced deaths caused by bacterial infections and was then a major breakthrough in the world of science and biochemistry.

Drug-resistant bacteria pose a real threat to us in the way that it is possible that one day there will be no bacteria susceptible to anti-biotics and we would effectively revert to the days prior to the discovery of penicillin. This potential outcome is worrisome to many scientists.

I have outlined here a number of more natural methods of killing bacteria that have used in the past that remain effective on drug-resistant bacteria.

Ozone

Ozone is tri-atomic oxygen and is extremely unstable; however it is also a very potent bacteriacide. It is often used on an industrial scale to kill bacteria and fungi but more and more it’s finding its way in the household.  Ozonators can easily be purchased online and can help to kill all germs in water and the great advantage of using ozone is that the ozone degrades into Oxygen and does not leave any unwanted chemicals in the water.  Ozonated water can also be used to wash vegetables which has the effect of killing germs in the vegetables.  Ozonated water will retain its anti-microbial properties for about 20 minutes at room temperature before the ozone dis-integrates to become oxygen.

You can do a simple Google search to find a home-use ozonator.

Silver

Silver has always been known to have anti-microbial properties and in the past some people put a silver coin in a water jar to keep the water dis-infected. Silver compounds are also used in wound dressing to reduce the chances of wounds becoming septic. Its use as an antiseptic dates back many centuries and was suspected to have been adopted independently by different civilisations in history. Silver Ions and Colloidal silver have been shown to exhibit anti-microbial efficacy.

Buying Silver Hong Kong [solved]

I’ve been looking around a lot for places to buy and sell silver in Hong Kong and I have finally found a place and bought some silver from them today.

The place to go is:-

Lee Cheong Gold Dealers Ltd
Ground Floor, 65-69 Bonham Strand East, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
Tel : +852 2542 1400

If you take the MTR – it is at the Sheung Wan Station and you have to get out at Exit A2.

They have silver ingots in different sizes – I think they also trade in Gold and other precious metals and I think they will take silverware and give you money for it but the handling charges are higher.

Their office is at but go to the address above since it’s their retail outlet.

Room 705, Wing On House, 71 Des Voeux Road Central, Hong Kong

And apparently they have been around for 60 years so I think they are reasonably reputable. The trading costs are quite reasonable and I was pretty happy with the service overall.

Around Dec, 2011 – I found another place which sells physical silver called Kitco (www.kitco.com.hk) – There silver products are good too but the spread is higher so you lose more money in the transaction of buying and selling.

Centos 5.4 – install x windows KDE doesn’t work (x86_64) [solved]

If you like me installed Centos 5.4 (x86_64) on a machine without having installed X windows (KDE or Gnome) and tried to re-install it afterwards and run into problems – it’s normal.

You will no doubt have found all these posts about how you should run:-

yum groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment"

or

yum groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
And then if there was a problem – there would be posts telling you that “GNOME Desktop Environment” is case-sensitive – blah blah…. So then you double check the command you ran and you find that you are correct. And then you think it may be a video card drivers problem. When you run the above command you will receive many “Transaction check error”s such as the ones below such as the following and others with Openssl.

file /usr/share/man/man8/selinux.8.gz from install of libselinux-utils-1.33.4-5.5.el5 conflicts with file from packagelibselinux-1.33.4-2.el5

In fact, the problem is to do with the architecture of your computer which arises from packages for both i386 and x86_64 being installed for OpenSSL and if you try to uninstall openssl there will be about 500 other packages that you will need to install.
Solution
When you run:-
yum groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
and you get transaction check errors – then you must find out what is conflicting and then if openssl is conflicting then run
yum remove openssl*.i386
And then you will prompted with about 30 dependencies that need to uninstalled… I uninstalled these dependencies and everything still worked – I can’t guarantee that it would work for you too.
After you do that X Windows should install properly when you run the following command again:-
yum groupinstall "X Window System" "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
For the future to avoid having this architecture problem; you should include a line to exclude other i386 packages from being installed:-
(1) Go into /etc/yum.conf
(2) Add line exclude='*.i386 *.i486 *.i586 *.i686 *.athelon'

Shopping Ideas in Hong Kong

For some people, shopping is a way of life….. I feel sorry for them but we shouldn’t these these pre-dispositions against them.

I found that the shopping mall in Hong Kong with the cheapest and best parking has to be Elements. It is ideal for those coming from Mainland China and people living in Kowloon but probably not as good for those in Hong Kong. It is large and does offer a huge number of shops and restaurants. I couldn’t find them on Google Maps if you search “Hong Kong shopping mall” you should find them.
