121BC Hong Kong | 42 – 44 Peel Street

Went to 121Bc Hong Kong last night on Peel Street. I will never go back after what I experienced.

The Sommelier there spent 20 minutes talking to us about their wine list and we ordered a bottle of 2008 Brunello; when I came to settle the bill they told us that they did not take credit cards – I was a little embarrassed because I wanted to treat my friends and didn’t carry that much cash with me.

I protested and mentioned the right thing to do was to have told your patrons about the payment policy at the beginning before the orders were taken especially when the amounts we were dealing with were significant; in response the barman told us that if we didn’t like the payment policy don’t come back. I was a little taken aback from the whole experience. I did not expect to go out whilst ordering expensive bottles of wines and be treated like that.

My recommendation is – this place serves over-priced wines and the people working there are rude.

Email Newsletters for iPhones | Map Links + Base Href | Embedded ImagesProblems

For all those unfortunate developers who are trying to get emails and email newsletters to work on iPhone Mail and other useless Apple devices, I sympathise with you.

After several hours of trial and error, I have discovered the following; which I hope will save others some time to figure the problems arising from iPhone compatibility.

(1) In an email newsletter or email communication  – you MUST always use the full image path.

WORKS:-

<a href=”http://xxxxxx.com/” target=”_blank”><img src=”http://www.gant.com.hk/xxxx/xxx.jpg” border=0 /></a>

DOESN’T WORK:-

<a href=”http://xxxxxx.com/” target=”_blank”><img src=”./xxx.jpg” border=0 /></a>

Links will not work properly in the second one and instead of linking properly you get a screen with icons of “Mail”, “Twitter”, “Facebook”, “Weibo”, “Assign to Contact”, etc. which is rubbish.

(2) Map links on iPhones

Don’t even think about it; it doesn’t even work on Apple Mail. It will however work on all other email browsers.

<map rect=”x,y,x1,y1″ etc.> will not work.

The hyperlinking problem only occurs with embedded images; if the images are pulled from online then this wouldn’t occur.

Asus rt-n12 Review

I just bought the Asus rt-n12 and it’s shit.

There are only 4 terminals connected to it and it’s slow… really slow…and very unstable. OK granted that we have a number of Virtual Boxes running with MAC/Pc ands Linux boxes but the crappy wireless router we had before offered better speed.

I don’t know whether Asus are deliberately slowing down the connection so that we would buy the more high-end versions of their routers but it’s really slow and unstable. WHY??

Hong Kong Attractions | 香港旅遊景點﹣空中攝影

Hong Kong Island Tour by Helicopter was the most remarkable activity I had in Hong Kong.  Their photography services was excellent. Apart from the common tourist attractions , I strongly recommended to my friends.

我的觀光團最令我印深刻的是机空中攝影,我們乘坐香港直升機,使用香港航空服務 。除了購物和遊覽香港景点外,我強調推薦給朋友游覽香港旅遊景點

Industrial Properties in Hong Kong

There are about 2,000 odd industrial properties in Hong Kong in total and this number is not expanding. Many of these were built between the 60s and 80s when Hong Kong was still manufacturing goods for export. Now that all of the manufacturing has moved to China; these industrial buildings are slowly being turned into other uses such as offices.

The Industrial Properties offer an interesting investment as they are exempt from the government legislations enacted in 2010 whereby a special stamp duty is levied if you buy and sell a property within 2 years. Moreover, there is limited supply and demand is forever growing.

I found a site recently that specialises in Industrial Properties in Hong Kong (www.oneday.hk). For residential properties you can use www.gohome.com.hk and Square Foot (www.squarefoot.com.hk).

Migrating from iPhone to Samsung

I have had enough of my iPhone 4. I spent 2 hours trying to download a PDF onto my iPhone that was sent to me by email and couldn’t do it; apparently this function is not natively supported on the iPhone. How smart?

iTunes is the slowest and most annoying piece of software that I have ever the displeasure of using. Even though I specifically specify what I want to sync; it would precede any “sync” function with an annoying “Backup”.

I am hoping that after migrating to an Android system I will never have to use another piece of software written by Apple. Also, I cannot see any of the Flash websites on iPhones; Steve Jobs says that it is become the software is “Closed” http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/. People in Glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

OS X is a closed system
iTunes is a closed system

Can you develop an App and sell it independently? NO is the answer; so it seems that Apple are a proponent of “Closed” systems so long as they own it otherwise would be deemed a terrible thing. Steve Jobs dying offers the world a glimmer of hope to the world that Apple will become less hypocritical.

Migrating Contacts from iPhone to Android

(1) Use iTunes (hopefully for the last time) – Sync your contacts to Google Contacts

Migrating Contacts from iPhone to SamSung

(2) Go to your Android Phone and do the following:-( On my Samsung phone)

(i) Applications
(ii) Settings
(iii) Accounts and Sync
(iv) Add Account
(v) Choose “Google” if you have a Gmail account
(vi)  Enter your Gmail Login and Password details

After that all your contacts should be transferred onto your phone. This assumes that your Phone is connected to the Internet.

4 January, 2011

After migrating to the Samsung Phone my life has changed dramatically to the better – the Android platform allows you to customise your dashboard which is really useful because now the first page of my phone will display all of my latest emails and I don’t need to click into the mail program to view emails. Also I can add on the dashboard financial charts which update automatically and I don’t need to click into the browser and then open up the charts that I need – it saves me a huge amount of time.

However, there is one major shortcoming of the Samsung Galaxy II phone and that is it takes ages and ages for the phone to charge up. We are looking at 3-4 hours to charge and that is simply ridiculous and not practical.

High Speed Train Timetable | 高铁时刻 時間表

Price for a ticket as of June 2011 is 490 RMB for second class and 780 RMB for first class and this is for a single ticket from Shanghai.  The trains stop many times in the middle; so most of the time the train will stop in ChangSha (which is the capital of Hunan) and other smaller cities and the price of the ticket would be less.

It’s been hard finding the train timetable for the new high speed train running from Shanghai. Please find below the information you need:-

To ascertain where each train stops you can check out the official website below:-
